Palazzo d'Avalos is the most important monument on Terra Murata, the highest and oldest point on Procida. It was built in the 16th century by the d'Avalos family as a fortified residence, strategically positioned to control the island and the Gulf of Naples. Over the centuries, the palace underwent profound changes: after the Bourbon period, it first became a royal residence and then, from the 19th century until 1988, the island's prison.
