The "Libero D'Orsi" Archaeological Museum of Stabiae is one of the most important cultural centers in Campania dedicated to the history of ancient Stabiae. Housed within the historic Reggia di Quisisana, the museum preserves and showcases artifacts from the Roman villas that once stood on the Varano plateau and in the ancient Stabian area, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, along with Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Named after Libero D'Orsi, the museum pays homage to the figure who, in the 1950s, promoted the rediscovery of the Stabian Villas, making a decisive contribution to the archaeological development of the area. Thanks to his work, numerous artifacts were recovered and studied, laying the foundation for the current museum institution.
The exhibition brings together over 500 artifacts, including frescoes, marble sculptures, bronzes, ceramics, furnishings, and decorations from famous Roman residences such as Villa Arianna, Villa San Marco, Villa del Pastore, and Villa di Carmiano. The works testify to the luxury and refinement of the ancient aristocratic residences overlooking the Gulf of Naples, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of the Roman elite.
One of the most innovative aspects of the museum is the use of multimedia technologies and interactive installations that help understand the evolution of ancient Stabiae and its surrounding area.
