It is one of the most isolated and peaceful places on the island and represents a perfect example of a historic hermitage created for contemplative life and spiritual retreat.
The hermitage dates back to the 15th century and was built as a place of prayer and isolation for religious communities, particularly eremitic and Franciscan orders, who sought a sanctuary far from urban centers. Over time, it also became a spiritual reference point for Capri sailors, who entrusted themselves to the Madonna di Cetrella before crossing the Gulf of Naples, attributing to her a protective function related to the sea and navigation.
The complex is simple and intimate, typical of rural monastic architecture: it includes a small church with two irregular naves, a chapel dedicated to the Madonna di Cetrella, several ancient monks' cells, communal spaces such as the kitchen and workspaces, and a small courtyard. Everything is built with local stone and basic materials, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Its location is one of its most fascinating features: it sits at an altitude of approximately 500–589 meters and offers a sweeping view of Capri, the Faraglioni, Marina Piccola, and the Gulf of Naples. The natural setting is dominated by Mediterranean vegetation and an almost total silence, interrupted only by the wind and the sounds of nature, creating an atmosphere of profound isolation and contemplation.
Even today, the hermitage is occasionally used for religious celebrations and small cultural events, especially in the spring and summer, thus maintaining a vibrant connection with the island's traditions. Getting there is part of the experience: starting from Capri or Anacapri, you climb towards Mount Solaro and then descend along a path immersed in nature to the Cetrella valley, on a journey that combines landscape, history and spirituality.
