A unique house-museum carved into the tuff rock in Serrara Fontana, created by a local artist who transformed an old cellar into a showcase of folk art and rural history.
The Serrara Fontana House Museum is located in the Cava Pallarito area, on the southern coast of the island of Ischia, between the villages of Buonopane and Fontana. It is a one-of-a-kind site, born from the ingenuity and creativity of Salvatore Di Meglio, a local bricklayer and artist, who transformed an old family cellar carved out of the tuff rock into an exhibition and living space rich in history and imagination.
Inside and outside the building are objects from Ischia's rural tradition, agricultural tools, everyday implements, and a large number of handmade works: stone and wood sculptures, shell mosaics, and decorations created with recycled materials. The entire complex is an example of artistically reinterpreted rock architecture, where each room recounts the island's rural life and its profound connection to the land and landscape.
The tour doesn't follow a traditional museum order, but unfolds in a free and narrative manner, through caves, steps carved into the rock, and panoramic terraces overlooking the surrounding nature. It's also a place of great emotional impact, where art, memory, and landscape merge into an authentic experience, far removed from conventional tourist routes.
